ALBUM REVIEW: KEVIN BURT – STONE CRAZY (Gulf Coast Records)

Gulf Coast Records are getting themselves a great roster of acts together and Kevin Burt epitomizes the high standards set. Here is a ten track album of the highest class blues tunes, recorded at Marz Studios, produced by Mike Zito. All self-penned other than Bill Withers composition, Better Off Dead.

Actually here on some songs like the title track, Stone Crazy there is a certain resemblance to the timbre of Mr Withers outstanding vocals. His songs tell stories of love and his observations with relationships. Just listen to the opener, I Ain’t Got No Problem With It, sets the scene. This is an emotionally charged roller coaster; his velvety vocals are full of soul, no more so than on, Rain Keeps Coming Down.

I’m Busting Out has a funky riff and marries his effortless guitar work with mellow toned organ played by Lewis Stephens. Same Old Thing is delivered with clarity of sound and a laid back guitar solo to swoon over. You Get What You See is an up-tempo swing blues number, delivering his own philosophy of his self-perception, Something Special About You is a slow infused love song, it just spills out emotion, very uplifting.

“Vocally exquisite, musically phenomenal”

Should Have Never Left You Alone brings in harmonica tones and a warning to his girl. The final track Got To Make A Change is a song for these days, inferring change can only be made from within yourself, very reflective, sweet slide on this. Vocally exquisite, musically phenomenal; a blues album to cherish.
