He could sing with a voice as smooth as silk, prolific in producing a lot of chart-topping hits with a light, sophisticated dusting of a pop touch. But he could also return to his gospel roots where he was already a star singer with the legendary Soul Stirrers and managing effortlessly to bring out such a harmonious lyrical soul ballad such as Bring It on Home to Me.

He died tragically at age 33 but his imprint on popular music and singing style will always remain and may never be repeated a pure joy.
