Gabe Stillman – What Happens Next : Album review

This is the first time I’ve come across Gabe Stillman, and what an introduction it is. Recently signed to Gulf Coast Records, he arrives with the confidence of someone who sounds as though he has been making records for decades. In reality, Stillman has spent the last ten years honing his craft, and What Happens Next feels like the moment that work comes fully into focus.

Executive producers Guy Hale, Mike Zito and Oli Overton have helped shape a collection that highlights exactly what Stillman is about. The title track opens proceedings with a silky, soulful vocal and a smooth, assured groove. It is a statement of intent. The Man I’m Supposed To Be Really follows straight out of blues heaven, driven by great guitar work and raunchy vocals that reflect years of steady graft.

There is a strong sense of versatility throughout. Teaming up with Anson Funderburgh on Shame Shame, Stillman reveals a rockier edge, laced with a touch of funk. The band behind him are tight and clearly well versed in blues, soul and funk traditions, giving the record both polish and punch.

What surprises most is the closing track, Gentle On My Mind. Written by Glen Campbell, it is not the obvious choice for a young blues artist, yet it works beautifully. The interpretation adds depth to the album and suggests that Stillman is not content to stay within predictable lines.

Across the record there are moments of classic rhythm and blues feel, nods to Slim Harpo and Ike Turner, and bright instrumentals that show both confidence and restraint. It is a compact set, but one that leaves a strong impression.

If this is your first introduction to Gabe Stillman, it is a compelling one. On the strength of What Happens Next, it seems likely we will be hearing a lot more from him in the near future.
