Eddie 9V has released ‘Whole Lot Coming For You’, the latest single from his forthcoming album Down Here, due on 6 November through Easy Eye Sound.
Produced by Dan Auerbach of The Black Keys, the album marks Eddie 9V’s first release for Auerbach’s Nashville-based Easy Eye Sound label.
Where previous single ‘Blowin’ Up’ leaned into Southern groove and soul, ‘Whole Lot Coming For You’ strips things back to something more direct. Built around a driving rhythm and an uninhibited guitar performance, the track gives Eddie room to simply turn up and play.
“‘Whole Lot Coming For You’ was one of my favourites to cut,” he says. “It was one of the last tunes we recorded, and it was nice to just rip Freddie King-style blues to get the juices out.
“At the end of the day everybody just likes to turn up their guitars and get a jam going.”
Finding freedom in Nashville
Down Here was recorded at Easy Eye Sound Studio in Nashville, with Auerbach overseeing a record that brings together blues, Southern soul, rock ’n’ roll and the loose energy Eddie 9V has developed through years on the road.
The sessions also took him into a different style of songwriting.
After largely following his own path as a writer and producer, Eddie was brought into a series of collaborative writing sessions led by Auerbach. Contributors included Marcus King, Pat McLaughlin and Daniel Tashian.
That process appears to have opened things up rather than polished away the rough edges.
“I hope when people hear this record they feel the soul of it,” says Eddie. “I want them to feel like they’re sitting in the studio with us as we’re making music.”
That sense of immediacy runs through ‘Whole Lot Coming For You’. Rather than trying to reinvent blues guitar, the song embraces the simple appeal of a band locking into a groove and seeing where it goes.
From Atlanta clubs to Easy Eye Sound
Raised in Atlanta, Eddie 9V started playing guitar at six and moved through metal and indie rock before discovering the blues.
A viewing of Howlin’ Wolf’s 1966 Newport Folk Festival performance proved pivotal, helping point him towards the music that would eventually shape his career.
He later built his reputation in Atlanta clubs, sometimes playing four-and-a-half-hour sets for little more than tips. By 17, he was already touring outside Georgia.
His debut album, Left My Soul In Memphis, followed in 2019, beginning a run of releases that gradually took his sound beyond traditional blues while keeping its feel and spontaneity intact.
That journey now leads to Down Here, and Eddie believes the biggest lesson from making the record was learning when to stop thinking and simply enjoy the process.
“Making this record has taught me how to put my guard down and just have fun rather than worrying about things,” he says. “I think that’s what you can feel on the record, a sense of freedom.”
