Veteran LA based blues and soul singer brings his wonderful vocal prowess to this set of vintage songs mixed with newer material. Kid Andersen handles production duties and also adds his superb guitar chops to the mix. The classic I’m So Tired features Green’s gritty vocals, wailing horns, catchy organ riffs from Jim Pugh and it all makes for a storming funky opener.
Little Milton’s If Walls Could Talk is another barnstorming performance from the whole band but the pace drops for Rick Estrin’s I Beg Your Pardon with Green’s pleading vocals and Pugh’s wailing organ. Are You Sure is an early Willie Nelson ballad and it’s an absolute beauty featuring Green’s emotion filled smouldering vocals and Andersen’s shimmering echo-laden guitar.
“old-school top notch soul man”
Cupid Must Be Stupid is a fun blues/funk workout but Blind Man has a classic dramatic vocal performance. Alabama Mike joins Green for a funky duet on Trouble and If You Want Me To Keep On loving You is a tasty chunk of Southern Soul. I Got There is an Estrin/Anderson penned rocker and this fine album closes with Ted Taylor’s beautiful ballad Be Ever Wonderful featuring an incredible vocal performance.
This is an old-school top notch soul man teamed with some younger guns and together they have produced an excellent album.
