Joanne Shaw Taylor shares defiant new single “Hell Or High Water”

Joanne Shaw Taylor has released her new single “Hell Or High Water”, out now via Journeyman Records. The track is a stripped-back, emotionally direct blues-gospel song that centres on resilience, belief, and facing inner conflict head-on.

Described by Joanne as “a defiant, soul-bearing blues gospel anthem”, “Hell Or High Water” addresses the mental battles that sit beneath the surface. It is not dressed up or softened. The song deals openly with doubt, pressure, and the effort it takes to keep moving forward when things feel unstable.

Built around a steady, hypnotic groove, the track grows through repetition and restraint rather than force. Handclaps and a rolling rhythm give it a grounded feel, while Joanne’s vocal stays front and centre throughout. Lines such as “Devil on my shoulder keeps whispering in my ear” and “Lord, don’t let me falter” frame the song as a personal reckoning rather than a performance.

Her guitar work is deliberate and controlled, cutting through the mix without excess. The solo is short, focused, and purposeful, serving the song rather than dominating it. The balance between grit and clarity is what gives the track its weight.

The release follows a strong period for Joanne, who spent much of the past year touring in support of her album Black & Gold. The record received wide praise, including a 9/10 review from Classic Rock Magazine, with further recognition from Powerplay, Guitarist Magazine, and American Blues Scene. A Deluxe Edition later expanded the album with acoustic versions that highlighted the strength of her songwriting away from full-band arrangements.

“Hell Or High Water” offers a clear signpost towards Joanne’s next phase. While firmly rooted in the blues, the song leans into emotional honesty and restraint, showing an artist comfortable letting space and simplicity do the work.

The single arrives as Joanne prepares for an extensive 2026 touring schedule, including major UK and European dates followed by a Spring run across the United States. Known for her direct connection with audiences and consistent live performances, she continues to build momentum without chasing trends.

“Hell Or High Water” is available now on all major streaming platforms, with the official music video also online.
