GHALIA Mississippi Blend

Album Review for Ghalia – Mississippi Blend – Released on Ruf Records.

Brussels born Ghalia Volt has brought out a second release following on from the success of the mostly New Orleans tinged “Let The Demons Out”. For Mississippi Blend, she delves into the Deep South.

Here she got in touch with some star performers from the Hill Country scene and recorded this at Zebra Ranch, Coldwater Mississippi which is owned by Cody and Luther Dickinson. This eleven-track, mostly self-penned release, captures a truly unique organic rootsy feel; it has a traditional approach with a modern twist.

Lyrically there are powerful songs on this release a highlight being Meet You Down The Road about the loss of a loved one. But she mixes things up with Drag Me Down, this a song about making your own path and striving to get there.

The love song, Squeeze has a very cutesy feel but full of her erstwhile punky roots. The more politically balanced tones of Why Don’t You Sell Your Children make the listener aware of people’s morals, very insightful into today’s society.

But it is old standards like, Wade In The Water that really stands out. Her interpretation of a simple riff melds well with Watermelon Sam’s rasping vocals and harmonica. Release Me is another tune full of emotion.

The guest list is awesome with her own band keeping rhythm with stalwarts such as Lightnin’ Malcolm on guitar and Cedric Burnside sharing drums with Cody Dickinson just joining in.

Finishing with, I Thought I Told You Not To Tell Them, this release oozes great musicianship, an excellent blend of songs. Her own guitar work is wonderful and vocally she is astute, she really has that feeling for a party and the vibe is very catchy. A stunning release, sure to increase her popularity!
