A new generation carrying the blues forward

Nashville-based guitarist Danny Garwood is already carving out a place for himself as one of the most promising young players to emerge from the modern blues scene. Inspired by the fire and feel of artists such as Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Eric Gales, and Stevie Ray Vaughan, Garwood’s focus is firmly rooted in keeping the blues alive and passing it on to the next generation.

Danny’s journey began at the age of ten when he attended his first blues jam. Invited up to play, the experience proved transformative. From that moment on, the guitar became a constant presence, with regular jam sessions and live performances following from the age of eleven. Those early nights on stage helped shape not just his playing, but his confidence as a performer.

In 2022, Garwood entered the Dallas International Guitar Festival’s ‘10 Under 20’ competition, where a chance on-stage invitation from Ally Venable changed everything. The performance went viral, amassing over five million views on YouTube and opening the door to support slots with Venable in both Houston and Nashville. Returning to the competition in 2023, Danny placed third overall, impressively doing so as the youngest competitor.

Among his standout career moments so far is sharing the stage with Buddy Guy and Christone “Kingfish” Ingram at Nashville’s Ryman Auditorium during Guy’s Farewell Tour. Experiences like these have further cemented Garwood’s reputation as a young player with maturity beyond his years.

Away from headline stages, Danny remains deeply connected to the roots of the music. He currently hosts the Youth Blues Jam at Ground Zero Blues Club in Clarksdale, Mississippi, in conjunction with the International Blues Challenge, helping encourage and inspire young musicians to step into the blues tradition.

A two-time Masterclass alumnus of the Pinetop Perkins Foundation workshops in Clarksdale, Garwood has also studied under blues legends including Bob Margolin of the Muddy Waters Band. These experiences continue to shape his approach, grounding his playing in tradition while allowing his own voice to develop naturally.

Still early in his journey, Danny Garwood represents something vital. A young musician not chasing trends, but honouring the blues by living it, learning it, and sharing it on stage wherever he can.
