KATIE KNIPP – LIVE AT THEATER 5150 – album review

Independent

Katie Knipp has long built her reputation on electrifying live performances, and Live At Theater 5150finally captures that magic in full flight. Recorded before a packed California audience, this expansive 16-track set isn’t simply a greatest hits package performed on stage; it’s a vivid snapshot of an artist and band thriving on spontaneity, chemistry and genuine emotional connection. Knipp’s voice remains the album’s greatest asset, effortlessly moving from smoky intimacy to full-throated blues-rock power.

Opener Santa Cruz Blues immediately establishes the night’s energy, while the hard-driving Bullet Train and the swaggering Outlaw Doc showcase a band that knows exactly when to tighten the groove and when to let the music breathe. Dirty Cables and the wonderful tune, Mud benefit from fresh arrangements that feel more muscular than their studio counterparts, driven by Steve Utstein’s rich Hammond textures and Quinn Hedges’ expressive guitar work.

The choice of covers is equally inspired. Bruce Springsteen’s State Trooper is transformed from its haunting folk origins into a dramatic blues-rock workout, while Justin Townes Earle’s If I Was the Devil, fits seamlessly into Knipp’s own songwriting. A rousing rendition of, John The Revelator reminds listeners just how deeply rooted she is in the blues tradition, even as she continually pushes beyond genre boundaries.

What makes this release such a rewarding listen is its authenticity. There are no studio tricks, just exceptional musicians feeding off an enthusiastic audience. It’s a confident celebration of live music and further proof that Katie Knipp remains one of contemporary blues’ most adventurous and compelling performers. Highly recommended listening.
