“Van Helsing” serves as a tantalizing glimpse into the sonic landscape of “Invocation,” a collection of songs that embodies Redfern’s evolution as an artist. Drawing inspiration from his introspective journey, Redfern embarked on a retreat to the west Wales coast, seeking solitude in a remote Sheppard’s hut with his trusted 1929 National Triolian resonator guitar. It was here that he found the clarity to craft the foundation of “Invocation,” exploring unconventional songwriting techniques that included meditation and visualizing complete musical compositions before capturing them on record.
“Invocation” marks a significant milestone in Redfern’s artistic evolution, showcasing his ability to push musical boundaries while staying true to his signature slide guitar prowess. From the bone-crushing riffs of “Van Helsing” and “Getaway” to the evocative landscapes of “The Native” and “Blind Me,” the album offers a dynamic sonic journey that solidifies Redfern’s position as a boundary-pushing musician.
