Hailed as one of the most electrifying guitarists of her generation, she has built a reputation for blending raw rock energy with soulful depth. With the success of her 2023 Grammy-nominated album Death Wish Blues, which topped the Billboard Blues Chart, Fish’s career skyrocketed, leading to tour spots with legends like The Rolling Stones, Slash, and Jon Spencer. Now, she’s back with what promises to be her most fearless and unapologetic album yet: Paper Doll, set for release on April 25, 2025.
A Record That Demands to Be Heard
Set for release this April via Rounder Records, Paper Doll showcases Fish’s boldest songwriting to date. Produced by Detroit garage-rock icon Bobby Harlow (The Go), the album dives deep into themes of defiance, personal growth, love, and loss. With a raw, unfiltered edge, every song on the record delivers a mix of visceral force and soul-stirring emotion.
“It’s taken me years to finally find my voice in a studio setting,” Fish reveals. “But with this record, I took everything I had and slammed it right on the table.”
Adding even more Detroit grit, Mick Collins (The Gories) lends his expertise on one of the tracks, amplifying the album’s edge and authenticity.
A Live Energy Captured in the Studio
Recorded between Austin’s The Orb and Los Angeles’ Savannah Studios, Paper Doll was shaped in the midst of Fish’s grueling touring schedule. The result? A record brimming with the pulse and momentum of her high-octane live performances.
“I’d never made a record on the road like that,” Fish admits. “Even though it was intense, it felt good to keep up the momentum from the live show. It helped us make an album that’s got a real living, breathing pulse to it.”
The album features Ron Johnson (bass), Jamie Douglass (drums), and Mickey Finn (keys), delivering a tight, unrelenting sound that underlines Fish’s electrifying presence.
New Single “Sweet Southern Sounds” Out Now
Alongside the album announcement, Fish has dropped the lead single “Sweet Southern Sounds”, co-written with fellow New Orleans-based songwriter Anders Osborne. The track blends smoldering guitar riffs and lush organ melodies into a gripping meditation on balancing passion with personal relationships.
“It’s an anthem about being on the road and feeling guilty about not prioritizing the people in your life,” Fish explains. “It’s hard to find that balance between taking care of your relationships and dedicating yourself to your music, and there’s definitely a tinge of heartache to that song.”
