Steve Cropper Brings Guitar Heaven with Star-Studded New Album ‘Friendlytown

Legendary guitarist, producer, and songwriter Steve Cropper, now in his 80s, shows no signs of slowing down. Recently nominated for his first solo GRAMMY, Cropper is set to release his highly anticipated new album, ‘Friendlytown,’ on August 23rd via Mascot Label Group/Provogue.

Teaming up with Billy F Gibbons from ZZ Top, Queen’s Brian May, and country-rock artist Tim Montana, Cropper promises a guitar heaven experience. “If your booty isn’t shaking in the first two bars, you’re already dead in a chair,” jokes Cropper about the new album packed with radio hooks.

The first single, “Too Much Stress feat. Brian May,” is out now, offering a groovy, mid-tempo taste of what’s to come. Featuring gospel-style backing vocals and fiery solos from May and Gibbons, this track showcases Cropper’s signature rhythm guitar.

Highlights of ‘Friendlytown’ include the title track, with Gibbons’ Texas blues leads, and the Bo Diddley-styled “You Can’t Refuse” featuring Tim Montana’s blues licks. Cropper produced the album with Jon Tiven and worked alongside musicians like Roger C. Reale and drummer Nioshi Jackson.

Cropper’s illustrious career includes two GRAMMY wins, numerous nominations, and recognition as one of the greatest guitarists by Mojo and Rolling Stone magazines. At Stax Records, he co-wrote and produced hits for Otis Redding, Wilson Pickett, and many more. Reflecting on his legacy, Cropper says, “I want it to be said that I was a nice guy.” His latest work, ‘Friendlytown,’ certainly adds to that legacy.
