Blues-rock virtuoso Joe Bonamassa is ready to turn the page once again with the announcement of Breakthrough, his most adventurous and genre-blending studio album to date, set for release on July 18th via his own J&R Adventures. At the heart of the announcement is the release of the album’s powerful title track“Breakthrough” – a soulful, hard-hitting anthem about letting go, moving forward, and finding your fire again.
Crafted across multiple continents and infused with a world’s worth of inspiration, Breakthrough marks a bold new chapter for Bonamassa. Produced by long-time creative partner Kevin Shirley, the album blends funky blues, Texas swing, acoustic ballads, and swaggering hard rock into a vibrant sonic journey shaped by sessions in Greece, Egypt, Nashville, and Los Angeles.
“I think this album, Breakthrough, marks a shift in the styling of Joe Bonamassa’s recording output,” says Shirley. “His emphasis has been on songs primarily. Co-written with Tom Hambridge, the title track “Breakthrough” captures the emotional core of the record, pairing gritty vocals and melodic guitar lines with lush instrumentation to create an uplifting anthem of transformation and persistence.
The new album follows a series of acclaimed singles, including “Still Walking With Me” and “Shake This Ground,” which offered early glimpses into the record’s adventurous spirit. Each track reflects Bonamassa’s evolving songwriting approach, rooted in emotional honesty and anchored by his unmistakable guitar work.
Breakthrough arrives during a period of major momentum for Bonamassa, who is currently undertaking an extensive European Spring Tour, followed by dates with his powerhouse supergroup Black Country Communion and a summer run of amphitheatre shows across Europe and the U.S.
