FABRIZIO POGGI’s Top 10 Blues

FABRIZIO POGGI  is an Italian singer, harmonica player, writer, Grammy Awards nominee, Hohner Lifetime Award, and two times Blues Music Award nominee, Blues Blast Music Award nominee, Jimi Award winner as “Best International Album”, Jimi Award nominee as “Best Album of the Year” and Jimi Award nominee as “Best Harmonica Player”, Golden Seal from the Chambre of Commerce.

“To me, the blues is a miracle and a miracle is always difficult to explain with simple words. The miracle of the blues is that it’s so full of power and wisdom that it touches every heart throughout the world. So also mine. It doesn’t matter where you were born, what language you speak, or what colour your skin is. Blues and spiritual, and music in general, are amazing gifts – many from wonderful unknown singers – to heal people’s souls. With the blues, I have my own connection to the shared human conditions of struggle, darkness, and pain cloaked in redemption, overcoming, and freedom.”

Blues taught me to be simple and humble. To love and respect people that come to my shows. To be nice to them. Because often they tell me some precious words that keep me going on when the wind of life sometimes blow too hard against me. The blues taught me to play from the heart. Always.

Here is the list of the songs I love:

1 – Pete Seeger – We Shall Overcome

It is not a blues song, but I love it because it is a strong message of hope, very helpful these days.

2 – Bob Dylan – I Shall Be Released.

This is one of the most beautiful spiritual songs ever written.

3 – Muddy Waters – Everything’s Gonna Be Alright.

In these hard times, this song has the right title.

4 – Blind Willie Johnson – The Soul of A Man

This is an old spiritual that I learnt from the great Texas bluesman Blind Willie Johnson and I’m still asking myself “what about the soul of man?”.

5 – Muddy Waters – I’m A Man

This song got me started playing the blues when I saw Muddy Waters singing it in The Last Waltz movie.

6 – Paul Butterfield and The Band – Mystery Train

This song got me into playing the harmonica. It means a lot to me. It was my personal “big bang”.

7 – Fabrizio Poggi – Hole in Your Soul

The idea for this song came to me when I saw these words written on the wall in Mississippi: If you don’t like the blues you have a hole in your soul. This is a song about music that’s able to fill everybody’s soul. It doesn’t matter where you were born, what language you speak, or what colour your skin is.

8 – Robert Johnson – Crossroad

In these difficult times, we really are at the crossroad trying to get a ride. A ride to save our lives.

9 – Muddy Waters – Got My Mojo Workin’

We really need a mojo working to live in this troubled world. A mojo named blues.

10 – Little Milton – The Blues Is Alright

Blues is the mother, blues is the root, and blues is for everybody, cause the blues, the blues is alright.
