STRUGGLE BUGGY – INCLUDING LEE BATES & BILLY NEWTON
‘…well worth seeking out’ – Blues Matters
Lee Bates (guitar) and Billy Newton(harmonica) make a rare London appearance with their band, Struggle Buggy. The band is unique in being an acoustic Blues band playing Delta, Ragtime, Hokum, Jug Band and a little Chicago Blues. Lee and Billy have spent the last 13 years playing together and have built a reputation as being one of the best and most entertaining acts on the British Blues scene in the Northeast. This is an exclusive London appearance. Billy’s harp playing is awesome – whether it’s Sonny Terry style, first position Jug band style or fat Chicago amplified harp, Billy has the tone and the licks to be considered one of the best in the UK.
Lee Bates has been playing blues since his early teens starting with the Delta Blues of Robert Johnson, Son House, Fred McDowell etc. A lover of National guitars Lee is known for his slide playing, exploring the ragtime sounds of Piedmont Blues and, later early Chicago Blues.
Struggle Buggy delivers a highly entertaining show of classic Blues from artists such as Washboard Sam, Tampa Red, Big Bill Broonzy and Little Walter. Mix these together with their own compositions and a healthy dose of irreverent humour for an entertaining evening of acoustic blues.
